Currently navigating menopausal hair, Kerry is on a journey to embrace her new-found confidence and personal style. Having struggled to find the right advice for styling and looking after her menopausal hair, Kerry is keen to inspire and educate other women who may also be experiencing changes in hair texture during the menopause.
Discovering a new confidence after the menopause
I’m Kerry and I'm 50 years old from East Preston which is a small village on the south coast of England.
Having retrained as a personal stylist and colour analyst a few years ago, I love working with ladies that feel like they’ve lost their way when it comes to their style and being able to give them back their confidence.
It's fantastic to be working with CLOUD NINE to raise awareness of menopausal hair and helping others who may be struggling with it.
Using the Temperature Calculator
Now that Kerry is experiencing dry and damaged hair from the menopause, she is focused on taking extra care of it. After using the CLOUD NINE Temperature Calculator, Kerry learnt she has type 2B hair and should be styling at 150 degrees.
"When I used the CLOUD NINE Temperature Calculator, I was so surprised that I needed to lower the temperature of my hairdryer and my straighteners because I didn't actually need to use it at such a high temperature."
Try it now to learn your optimum styling temperature for your hair type.
How has the menopause affected your hair?
Oh, there have been many things! I'd say the main thing with the menopause is that it's exaggerated the bad parts of my hair I had in the first place. The dryness has increased, it's become more frizzy, I'm experiencing more breakage and split ends and I find that I'm not able to grow it much.
What challenges have you faced styling your menopausal hair?
I have to keep my hair much shorter and have it cut very regularly in order to keep it healthy. When you're going through the menopause, you have to really rethink how you style your hair. It generally means having to change the tools and products that you're used to. I try to use lower heat on my hair now which means turning my hairdryer and straighteners down. Sometimes I just leave it to do its own thing.
As a woman experiencing the menopause, do you feel there’s enough education in the hair industry?
I didn't really think about the menopause until I started experiencing it. I've chatted to people about it since and there really isn't a lot of advice out there. People think the menopause is just a hot flush every now and then but it affects so much more - your hair, your brain, everything really. There are a lot of people struggling with it so it would be nice if there were more people talking about it and more advice for women trying to style their menopausal hair.
When do you feel most unstoppable?
Feeling unstoppable is something that I feel comes from looking my best. When I've done my hair and makeup and I've got a nice outfit on, I feel good about myself. That makes me feel unstoppable.
What tips would you give to someone struggling with menopausal hair?
I would definitely suggest to anyone else going through it just to lower the temperature, invest in some CLOUD NINE tools. and really try and look after your hair. The healthier it looks and the healthier it feels, it will make you feel better all round.
What do you love about CLOUD NINE?
I first discovered CLOUD NINE on Instagram and the thing that drew me in was the variable temperature control that is featured on the products. I used to put my hairdryer on, put my straighteners on, and not even think about the temperature. It was so interesting to see that I could actually use CLOUD NINE tools and it would be so much better for my hair than what I was using.
