Being from an Asian background and growing up in the East Midlands, Khushpreet was immersed in a hybrid British and Punjabi culture. Spending her younger years feeling like her long, thick black hair was unrepresented in the media, today she hopes to inspire all women and girls to embrace their natural hair type and be confident in who they are.
Here's Khushpreet's story.
Embracing culture and individuality
I’m Khushpreet. I’m 30 years old and I'm from Leicester. My long, thick, black hair is an important part of my culture, but growing up I never saw anyone who looked like me on TV or in the media. So I never knew how to style it. Now, I'm passionate about women's health and wellbeing, especially celebrating individuality and different hair types.
I'm so pleased to be working with CLOUD NINE to inspire other women to celebrate their uniqueness.
Using the Temperature Calculator
Having coarser and thicker type 1A hair means Khushpreet's optimal styling temperature is 180 degrees.
"Before using the CLOUD NINE Temperature Calculator, I didn't know what heat setting to use for my hair type. I can't believe I was using the wrong temperature for all these years! Now I know my optimum temperature, I feel much more confident with styling and caring for my hair."

How was your hair growing up?
Being from an Asian background, having long hair is really important playing a huge part in my identity and my culture. I would often plait it because it was so long and really hard for me to manage. I didn't feel confident with styling so I would mostly have it long and straight.
What challenges have you faced with your hair?
Styling my hair has always been quite challenging. Because my hair's so dark and straight, a lot of hairstyles don't show up on me like they would on blonde or brunette hair. I'd have to use really high temperatures on my styling tools to create looks with an impact, and even then it wouldn't always hold!
How has your culture affected your hair journey?
Growing up, hot oil treatments were part of my weekly routine so my hair was always super shiny. People would always comment and ask why my hair was so greasy, when in reality it was clean! My culture meant I was very limited with what I could do with my hair and it was often plaited or tied back.
Do you think the hair industry has become more inclusive for Asian hair types?
Growing up in the nineties, I never saw anyone who looked like me on TV, especially not someone with long black hair. I feel like the industry has become much more inclusive and I see a lot more representation on TV and in the media. There's a lot more styling tips and haircare advice out there for people with my hair type which is great.
What makes you feel confident?
I feel confident knowing that beauty comes in different shapes, sizes and hair types. It's important to know that beauty is individual and your journey is separate from everyone else's. Embrace your individuality and never follow the crowd.
What tips would you give to someone struggling with styling thick hair?
Work with what you have and make sure you use the right haircare products for your hair type and texture. It's so important not to mould yourself into something you're not - don't feel as though you have to follow the crowd. CLOUD NINE have lots of great tips for styling thick hair and their Wide Iron has been an absolute godsend.
What do you love about CLOUD NINE?
