Own Your Heat

Why Your Hair Colour Matters

Your natural hair colour can affect how strong it is, and its ideal styling temperature. Black hair is typically the densest, giving it a fuller, more voluminous look, while red or grey hair tends to have a lower strand count. Working out the best heat setting for your hair also depends on whether your hair is its natural colour, dyed, or chemically treated.

Dyed hair

Lower temperatures around 150°C are best to prevent colour fading when styling dyed hair – whether it’s semi-permanent, permanent, or toner-treated.

Bleached hair

Bleached hair, especially on hair that was black or brown to begin with, is more vulnerable to heat damage. It’s recommended to use the lowest temperatures, ideally between 110°C and 130°C, to protect hair and retain its moisture and shine.

Untreated, natural hair

Natural hair that hasn’t been coloured or treated chemically can generally withstand higher temperatures without as much risk of damage. Depending on whether your hair is straight, curly or somewhere in between, your ideal temperature range is from 150°C to 190°C.

Red hair

Red hair tends to be delicate with a low strand count, so it’s best to style red hair at a lower heat setting of 150°C and 170°C to prevent damage and maintain its glossy shine.

Blonde hair

Blonde hair is generally more prone to heat damage due to its lighter pigmentation. Go for lower to moderate temperatures, ideally between 150°C and 160°C, to style without causing dryness or brittleness.

Black hair

If you’ve got straight or wavy black hair, it tends to be quite tough and can handle higher heat compared to lighter hair colours. So, when you’re styling, aim for a temperature between 160°C and 180°C to get that perfect smooth and shiny look.

Grey and white hair

If you’ve got grey or white hair, it can be a bit on the delicate side and can get dry easily. To keep it looking its best, stick to moderate styling temperatures – think around 150°C to 170°C.
